MEANING OF HIZIR

HIZIR- The patron saint in the heart of Anatolia

When we founded the HIZIR Foundation, it was immediately clear to us which history we based our vision on and who inspired us. For this reason we would like to take you on a little journey into the past.

In the picturesque climes of Anatolia, the patron saint Hızır often appears as a venerable man with a white beard riding a majestic white horse. Therefore, it is also popularly known as “Bozatlı Hızır”. His presence is surrounded by numerous fascinating stories that are deeply rooted in tradition.

One of the most impressive stories takes us back to Noah's companions, who asked Hızır for help in a time of great need. It is said that he protected a ship loaded with people during a devastating storm. After overcoming the danger, those who were rescued are said to have fasted for three days out of gratitude to Hızır.

In the Alevi faith, Hızır plays an essential role in daily life. Many Alevis make vows in his name or seek help under his protection. In some regions, children, mountains, lakes and streets are named after Hızır's name. A ritual dance prayer called "Hızır semahı" is another expression of this deep belief.

Well-known expressions such as "Thanks to Hızır", "May Hızır come" and "May the meal be of Hızır" are widespread in the Alevi community. Believers are convinced that the holy brothers Hızır and İlyas drank the "Water of Immortality" to assist seekers and wanderers on their mystical path. According to this belief, they come to the aid of those in need and sincerely ask for help, and are rewarded with good fortune and prosperity. Hızır, the protector and benefactor, thus becomes a living symbol of hope and goodness in the hearts of the Alevi community.

It is important to us to be a light for the children and young people in Turkey today, tomorrow and for as long as we can. With our work we also want to inspire others to be there for the poor and to give them hope.
